Should You Live On Campus or Off Campus?

Depending on your objectives and goals, which college you attend, and what part of the country you live in, either choice might be a better fit for your situation. However, it’s a good idea to start your college journey on campus. Studies show that students who live on campus are more likely to graduate than students who don’t. In deciding where to live, think about the following:

  • On-campus benefits
Living on campus keeps you in the middle of a vibrant campus life and culture, with easy access to classes, dining, libraries, labs, events, and other resources. And you may not need a car if you live on campus, which can save you money.
  • Off-campus benefits
Off campus living can offer more space, privacy, and flexibility, with the option of sharing expenses with roommates. Some off-campus housing will include amenities like pools, fitness centers, study areas, and access to public transportation. Keep in mind that when you live off campus, you’re likely preparing your own meals. This takes time and money.
  • Compare the costs
Consider the extra costs of living off campus. Most residence halls are furnished and pay for your utilities and internet fees. Plus, transportation costs will be a factor if you decide to live off campus. Before signing a lease, be sure to look at several different options to get an idea of what rent is reasonable for your area.
  • Check your college’s policies
Some colleges may have rules that require you to live on campus your freshman year or rent from university-approved apartments.
