Interpreting the Student Aid Report (SAR)
Make sure you receive your SAR and review it for accuracy.
After you submit the FAFSA, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) which identifies the amount your family can be expected to contribute to your education and reports the information you supplied on the FAFSA. You should receive your SAR about four weeks after you submit your FAFSA. You may receive your SAR sooner if you submitted your FAFSA electronically.
It's your job to review it carefully. It is paperwork, after all. You might be asked to supply additional information before your financial need can be calculated. Follow the directions to make any necessary corrections and supply any missing or additional information. If you make corrections, send the SAR back to the federal processor to the address listed on the form.
The information from your FAFSA will be sent to the schools and colleges you listed. If you are eligible for aid, the financial aid offices at those schools will use the information to put together a financial aid package for you. The schools will notify you about what kind(s) of financial aid you are eligible to receive through an award letter.
Also, the school you plan to attend may require additional information from you to support or clarify the information in your SAR. If you don't supply all the information needed, you might miss out on the aid that you need to obtain your education.
If no changes are necessary, photocopy the entire SAR and keep it for your records. Check with the financial aid offices at the schools to which you applied to find out if they need the original SAR and to see if there are any other forms you need to complete to qualify for aid.
