College graduates: don’t forget about health insurance

Many students don’t think about health insurance or paying for medical treatment until an illness or emergency hits. In many cases, that’s too late. If that’s you, think again. Once you graduate from college, you will most likely be uninsured, and unknowingly, you will be in the market for health insurance.

Many health insurers only cover college students as part of the parent’s insurance policy while the students are in school. It’s one of the last cords cut as you leave college and move into the job market.

More and more students find themselves needing health insurance once they graduate. Recognizing the growing number of uninsured adults aged 19-29, many states have enacted legislation extending parental health coverage for dependents up to age 25, some even up to age 30.

Upon graduation, graduates can opt for an individual health policy ranging from $40-100 per month. Some parents even insist on the coverage. After all, it’s better to be covered and not need it, than to need it and not have it.
