Pact for College?

Three Central High School graduates are relying on friendship and mutual support to thumb their noses at what history and circumstance would typically have them believe about their chances of going to college.

In an inner city school where less than half of the graduating students go on to any college or technical institute and only one in five goes to a four-year university, these Kansas City high school friends made a group pledge to help see each other into and through college.

The pact's commitment is paying off. They came through high school with grade point averages of 3.0 and above, and earned ACT scores high enough to give them college options. Each friend in the pact held his own skills, whether it was athletics, writing, or math. But leveraging their collective strengths allowed the friends to pursue their higher education dreams.

Their parents, seeing the improbable become a reality, are proud of the pact's self-created support that helped their sons go to and pay for college.
