Total submersion for middle-schoolers

With the help of a new partnership between Fifth Third Bank and Purdue University, Hammond’s Scott Middle School near Chicago is implementing an innovative submarine simulation program designed to spark interest in advanced scientific and mathematic concepts among Hammond middle school students.

The program, “Exploration Earth: Mission Ocean,” incorporates subject matter with classroom experiments and simulation exercises in order to enhance science- and math-based learning. The inventive program makes use of a submarine simulator and NavyOps software in a way that promotes experiential understanding of technological concepts for middle-schoolers.

Purdue Calumet’s School of Education developed the program from a U.S. Department of Navy grant received in 1996 and, through the efforts of its Center for Science and Technology Education, hopes to continue developing and spreading innovative platforms for students in K-12 classrooms.
