January 29, 2009Outstanding School Counselors recognized
On January 28, 2009, 10 school counselors were flown to Washington, D.C., to celebrate being recognized as the best school counselors in the country. During the three-day celebration, the 10 finalists attended Congressional meetings, toured the capital, and enjoyed a black-tie gala in their honor. The School Counselor of the Year award is a recognition program of the American School Counselor Association.
Over 400 counselors from elementary, middle, and secondary schools in the United States competed for the top honor and were judged on counseling innovation, effective programs, leadership, and contributions to students. All 100,000 members of the profession were eligible to compete.
This year's winner is Julie Hartline from Campbell High School in Smyrna, Georgia. The other finalists hailed from Elkhart, Indiana; Suwanee, Georgia; Moreno Valley, California; Duluth, Georgia; Beaverton, Oregon; Valdosta, Georgia; Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; Alexandria, Virginia; and Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
Nominations for the 2010 School Counselor of the Year award can be submitted starting in the spring.
