October 8, 2008Make “scholars” out of your students and patrons
The geniuses at Google have done it again. You are probably already very familiar with the world’s most popular search engine — Google. However, you may or may not know about an outstanding feature called “Google Scholar.”
As a specialized search tool within Google, Google Scholar gives the user a simple way to search for scholarly literature on a broad range of topics. From one search engine, users can search for peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, abstracts and articles — the sources of which include academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories, universities and other scholarly organizations.
By directing your students or patrons to Google Scholar, they will be able to best utilize the resources that your library provides. This can be done in two ways — by becoming part of Google Scholar’s “Library Links Program” or through “Support for Library Search.”
