August 15, 2008Earth Force introduces a whole new way to “eat green”
Students who are part of an elective organization called “Earth Force” have made a big lunchtime change at Westlake Middle School in Erie, Pennsylvania. Due to the actions of this eco-friendly crew, Styrofoam trays will no longer be used in the cafeteria, as students have identified them as problematic. Through extensive research, the students of Earth Force found that the trays were most likely a carcinogen and a pollutant to the environment, being that they’re not recyclable.
The students of Earth Force decided that they needed to find an alternative to the trays that would be cost-effective and cause less waste. After doing some research online, the students found that using reusable plastic trays would not only be better for the environment, but cost the school $700 less per year than the Styrofoam trays. They brought this idea to their school administrator, and after presenting their case, their proposal was approved.
Students, teachers, and administrators at Westlake Middle School have learned a valuable lesson on conservation from the students of Earth Force. The students of Earth Force say they hope their ideas will catch on at other schools throughout the country.
