South Carolina breaks record for college scholarships granted in 2008

According to a recent announcement from the state Department of Education (ED), 2008 high school graduates in South Carolina have earned over $767 million in college scholarships. This is not only a record, but $83 million higher than those granted in 2007.

ED added that 90 percent of South Carolina's scholarships are academic, with the remaining 10 percent being athletic. South Carolina has LIFE, HOPE, and Palmetto Fellows scholarships that make up roughly 20 percent of the state's total.
