Improving Your Cultural Competency Skills as an Educator

In these changing times, it has become more important than ever to recognize the cultural differences that exist among students within your classroom. It has been suggested in fact, that a lack of doing so may have a negative effect on the learning experience of children from diverse cultural backgrounds. In recognizing a child’s cultural upbringing, you are including them and fostering a sense of community in the classroom, therefore creating a more comfortable learning environment.

The Indiana Black Expo in Marion County, Indiana was the site of the “cultural competency” workshops for teachers this past week. The driving motivation behind these workshops was to examine the different ways in which teachers can foster connections with their students from varying cultural backgrounds. The simple belief is that the more you know and understand about your student and their background, the easier it is to connect with them, and the more likely they are to learn in your class.

Research shows that an astounding percentage (35 percent) of students from diverse cultural backgrounds feel that their teachers do not care about them or their culture. This has been proven to lead to an overall lack of interest in academics and ultimately increased dropout rates. The hope of those putting forth efforts in the arena of cultural competency, is that through awareness, this situation will improve.
