July 01, 2008Model classroom offers technology lessons to educators
Hallsville Independent School District in Longview, Texas, has a new classroom, installed this June, to serve as a model for teachers and administrators across the nation. This classroom is meant to serve as an example of how to work technology into daily lessons of all subject areas. For a generation of students that is undoubtedly well-versed in various forms of multimedia, this is a concept that the district is very excited about.
Within the classroom, one will find 20 student desks with wireless computer notebooks and workstations for a variety of different tasks. Students can use one of these workstations to conduct research on the internet, and the other to produce various forms of multimedia. A classroom of this design came into being at an estimated cost of $70,000 and is only Apple's second model classroom in the country; the first is at Apple's headquarters in California. Though the technology in Hallsville's model classroom is based on the school's specific needs, everything in the classroom is currently available to any school.
Ideally, the students in this model classroom would create a presentation for their classmates, after working in groups and researching a topic via the classroom's technological resources. This type of collaboration is intended to encourage teamwork and communication skills, versus following a more traditional lecture-style of teaching.
Those who are interested should be able to tour the classroom starting this July. Viewers must contact the school district to schedule a time, and will have the choice of seeing the room with the school district or Apple staff.
