Former U.S. Justice O'Connor Announces Videogame Arrival

Sandra Day O’Connor, former Supreme Court justice, recently announced the arrival of a videogame project that is intended to teach children how the U.S. court system works.

O’Connor says she got involved with creating the project called "Our Courts" from a point of personal concern in reference to what exactly our students are learning about the U.S. court system in public schools. At a conference entitled “Games For Change,” O’Connor expressed that she hopes this use of gaming technology will improve our society both socially and educationally.

The Our Courts project will be broken up into two parts. The first part is an on online interactive program that is designed to be used by 7th to 9th grade students. The second part is designed for young people to use in their free time. O'Connor said she has seen, through her own personal experiences, that technology is one of the best ways to encourage children to learn, because it is delivering an important message to them through a medium with which they are very familiar.

The program, which was developed with Georgetown University law school and Arizona State University, will be distributed free of charge online. The web site at www.ourcourts.org should have some basic content by September 2008 and be up and running on an interactive level within a year.
